Every few weeks I feel a sudden urge to run SNGs. It only takes me a couple of hours to be reminded why I can't stand them : Bubbling. I know everyone hates it, and I know that I am not particularly unlucky, but the same old procedure of having some dork be the shortstack, folding 10 hands in a row cutting his stack in half, then OBVIOUSLY finding KK on the 11th hand to triple him up, then you pot-comitting your AJs when OBVIOUSLY the BB has AQ or 99 or something and busting you in fourth is just SOOO demoralizing ! I guess it is because you can't continue to play with the idiot ? Anyway, i really despise this ! I'm going to keep this post bookmarked, maybe as my home page, just in case I ever feel the need to play Sit'n'Gos again !

(I lost like $60, so that's not the reason I'm pissed)

I am currently on Koh Chang in the gulf of Thailand. The weather is beautiful, very warm but not too hot or too humid, the ocean is an amazing 29 degrees, one hour massages either on the beach or in a nice spa setting are about 6 Euros, and if you like fish, rice and spicy then the food is amazing too.
So, of course I've been playing a lot of online poker since I got here :)
No, really, I have. Not doing too well though; I am up about $200 in like 3k hands of 200NL and 400NL.

Ok so yea its pretty hard to find poker hands that are still interesting. Most of them are like '..and then he went all-in with deuces against my Aces and won asgfdgf..'

Stayed home for the most part this weekend and played lots of online poker, at least by my standards. Probably 2500 hands or so, mostly 400 NL but some 600 NL and a little bit of 200 NL.

I won around $2k between friday night and saturday at lunchtime, then went out into the real world to go shopping for clothes (finally had some jackets made !), then played more after getting back from dinner and lost about $1500 (most of this was at NL600). Sunday I moved back to NL400 and won $1300, so the total for the weekend was still almost $2k. It's kind of annoying to be a losing player at 600NL, but I guess 500 hands is hardly a good measure of skill :)

I'm going to Thailand for two weeks this coming sunday, so it's a good thing I have rediscovered some interest in online poker.. Can't just spend all my time on the beach !

I can't help but feel neither one of them played this hand perfectly :)

You know you're doing something right when you can reraise someone enough to piss him off so much that he'll throw his stack in with no hand at all :)

If you want to stack someone, don't slowplay. Obviously would've stacked me.

When I was bored for a while last night I watched instructional poker videos from around the web. For the first time ever. And man, are they entertaining ! These people suck ! No, really, most of them are just bad at poker. I wonder at which point you start thinking 'Hey, I really should shoot some instructional videos and put them up on my own website'...If you're winning a lot you seems like you can't be bothered. If you're losing it seems like you'd have the decency to not pass your expertise on to others. I guess you'd have to be a marginally winning or break-even middle limits player ? Whatever.

I'm continuing my shopping spree. I played some of my favorite old board games again last night, Focus and Manhattan. Focus (by Sid Sackson, if you're a gamer that should mean something to you) especially is probably the best designed board game. Ever. Well, at least the best design that is not a classic (by which I really just mean Scrabble is probably better and games like Go are obviously better).
So yea, anyway, buying a bunch of old favorites now. Most of them are of course german since we make the most awesome board games. We also don't have to paint little miniature figures, and most of our games don't include Orcs or Elves. This is what I have bought so far :

So, I decided I hate writing in German. It just doesn't seem to go with poker and its terminology. Back to English it is.
After only a few days of playing online, I got tired of it again. The cycle of 'start to play, win some, lose some, lose interest, quit for a while, start to play, etc' seems to be getting a bit shorter every time. This time I started playing 1/2 SHNL the last few days of december, won about $2k in a few days of playing, played some 2/4 for a few hours where the pots where a lot more heavily contested, lost $1100, and have not played since then. It's not like losing $1100 is a particularly bad hit, or that I don't feel I can win or any such thing, I'm just not interested.

Instead, I went shopping. I bought some CDs, ordered lots of DVDs for our upcoming trip to thailand, ordered travel speakers both for the thailand trip and the soccer locker room, and am in the process of ordering a new cell phone. I almost went so far as to buy a new TV, but was able to remind myself at the last minute that I don't actually ever watch TV.

Wonder if I'll ever get an award for singlehandedly keeping our economy going.

In den letzten drei Tagen habe ich doch tatsächlich zwei online Sessions eingelegt mit jeweils 4-5 Stunden 1/2 SHNL. Muss mich erstmal wieder an das online play gewöhnen, und weil ich sowieso nur noch 2k auf Party hatte, werd ich 1/2 spielen bis ich das verdoppelt hab und dann 2/4 usw..
Ist auch besser so, ich find mein Spiel nämlich immer noch ziemlich schlecht, auch wenns ganz ordentlich läuft.
Ich beherrsche auch immer noch die Aces nicht, ich bin echt typischer winsmall, losebig Spieler mit Aces. Irgendwie schaffe ich es nie, mal von TPTK o.ä. voll ausbezahlt zu werden, und verstehe auch nicht so ganz, wieso das nicht geht...

Maaaann.
Irgendwas an der Struktur dieses PL Spiels stört mich, aber ich komm nicht drauf was es ist. Also nicht PL im allgemeinen, sondern das Spiel in Hamburg/Schenefeld. Muss wohl daran liegen, daß die meisten sich tatsächlich nur für 500 einkaufen, was 25 BB sind. Das allein ist ja noch nicht so schlimm, aber es sind natürlich alle immer für ein potsize raise dabei - jeder hat dann outs auf irgendwas und keiner kann mehr folden. Ich glaub dieses Spiel ist erst interessant ab einer virtual stack size von 4-5k oder mehr anstatt der üblichen 100 BB, und soviel mag ich immer ungern auf den Tisch legen in so einem ready-to-gamble-Spiel. Allerdings sind auch selten mehr als zwei andere Spieler so deep. Jedenfalls werde ich nicht nochmal mit 3k Euro in der Tasche mitspielen, das macht einfach keinen Sinn.

Am Freitag habe ich mal wieder eine Runde 10/20 Pot Limit Hold'em gespielt, hauptsächlich weil der mittlerweile fast berühmte Hassan nicht da war. Auch wenn in anderen Publikationen ein anderer Eindruck entsteht : Hassan ist mit Abstand der gefährlichste Spieler im Norden wenn es um PLH geht. Er spielt unendlich viele Hände, hat ein sehr gutes Gefühl dafür wann sein Gegenspieler schwach und dadurch bluffbar ist, und bekommt als VPIP 100 - Spieler natürlich auch viel zu viel Action für seine Monster. Wie auch immer, jedenfalls war er nicht da, also mal wieder PL gezockt. Es gab auch so einige interessante Hände, leider mit insgesamt schlechtem Ende für unseren Helden :)
Eine kleine Auswahl :
- Amir raised utg+1 auf 40, zwei Caller, ich potte aus dem SB auf 220, er re-potted und ich folde. Im Showdown (natürlich wird er noch gecalled) zeigt er KK.
- Ich open-potte TT auf 70 utg, Jan (www.50outs.com) called utg+1, David called utg+2, und irgendwer called noch. Flop 982 rainbow, ich bet out 200, Jan called, David pushed für weitere 700. Ich denke kurz nach und folde (vor Jan habe ich übrigens keine Angst an dieser Stelle), Davids KK besiegt Jans A9 im Showdown.
- Ich potte JJ im button für 150, werde nur von Kai mit TT und 230 Euro Stack gecalled, und gewinne auch mal.
- Tony raised auf 70 in MP, ich call mit 66, BB called auch. Flop A77, Toni macht untypisch kleinen bet von 70 in den 220 pot. Eigentlich wollte ich auf so einem Flop versuchen ihm den pot wegzunehmen, aber mit so einem kleinen raise kann ich nichts anfangen, sollte also wohl einfach folden. Ich entscheide mich aber für raise 200 auf 270, aber Toni comes back over the top für insgesamt 600. Toni ist ein guter, tighter Spieler, und mein image ist (offensichtlich) sehr weak/tight. Ich überlege kurz ob er AK oder AA wirklich so spielen würde und komme zu dem Schluß daß er so in der AT/AJ range sein müsste, weil er mit AK oder besser wohl trappen würde. Ich habe noch ca. 1200, dh ich könnte sein raise nochmal für ca. 900 toppen und bin mir fast sicher daß er AJ folden würde. Wie auch immer, ich vertraue nicht auf all das (mag ja auch besser so sein) und folde einfach.
- Ich habe AQo im button und announce 'pot'. Jan (im SB) hat mich anscheinend nicht gehört und sagt seinerseits ein raise an. Als er darauf aufmerksam gemacht wird daß ich potte (auf 150, viele Limper), überlegt er kurz und called nur. Irgendwie denke ich an dieser Stelle, daß er ein Monster haben muß; wahrscheinlich weil er überlegen muß - mit einer random raising (aber nicht reraising-) hand würde er einfach 140 reinwerfen. Jedenfalls habe ich die Hand schon aufgegeben, aber der Flop ist Q87 mit 2 Diamonds, und ich habe sogar das Ad. Es wird zu mir gechecked, der pot ist über 600 Euro, ich habe noch ca. 900, und ich habe 3 Gegner. Ich entscheide mich, einmal mitzuchecken und abzuwarten was meine Gegner (vor allem Jan) so tun. Der turn ist ein blank, Jan macht ein dickes bet out, alle folden, ich treibe mein weak-tightes Spiel auf die Spitze und folde mit, allerdings mit einem miesen Gefühl. DANN allerdings bezahlt Toni Jan 5 Euro um seine Hand anzusehen, und Jan zeigt KK. Fast wäre ich eine Ehrenrunde gelaufen :)
- Irgendwann bin ich ca. 1k hinten; tolle laydowns machen ist zwar schön fürs Ego, der Stack wird davon allerdings auch nicht größer. Dann limpe ich A5ss nach 6(!) limpern im Button, calle 40 auf dem 8s5c2d flop, calle 80 auf dem Ts turn, und weil alle fleissig mitgecalled haben gewinne ich auf einmal einen 1k+ pot auf dem 4s river und bin sogar wieder 100 Euro vorn. Absurd eigentlich.
- Dann potte ich KK utg auf 70. utg+1 (Ali) called, as does the SB, a persian-american player I had not previously played with. This guy had been quiet for the first hour that he played, but during the last hour of play apparently discovered the joy of check-raising. Four times in the last hour, he made a pot-size checkraise either on the flop or turn against various players, which in this game is usually an all-in raise for at least one of the players, and an uncharacteristically aggressive move. Nobody ever called. Anyhow, the flop came T33 rainbow, I bet 150 into the 230 pot, and he checkraised me to 680. He had about 550 left after that, so it basically was a push, leaving me to decide whether or not

Ich muß mich also nun entscheiden, ob er blufft, ob er ein Paar overplayed, oder ob er einfach fünfmal in einer Stunde super getroffen hat. Nach einiger Überlegung pushe ich, er called, zeigt 63o und ich bin wieder 1k hinten.
